Mori Hamada & Matsumoto recently expanded its intellectual property practice significantly through its merger, effective July 1, 2005, with Max Law Offices, a firm with highly regarded expertise in the areas of intellectual property, information technology and entertainment law.  The firm has a comprehensive intellectual property practice, covering both litigation and other dispute resolution proceedings, as well as a full range of transactional matters.

The firm has significant experience in handling Japanese and international infringement cases involving patents, trademarks and copyrights, including litigation involving patent invalidation claims and employee inventions.  The firm has often been involved in complex multi-jurisdictional proceedings, working closely with other international law firms.  Whether the matter is large or small, the firm has a reputation of aggressive representation with a view to achieving the best possible result for the client.

The firm's intellectual property transactional practice includes representation in connection with a wide range of licensing matters, including joint research and licensing contracts for patents and other intellectual properties.  Recently, the firm has been handling increasingly complex structured finance transactions where intellectual property rights are used as collateral.  The firm's intellectual property practice group draws on its extensive litigation experience to provide effective representation in the drafting and negotiation of transactional documentation.

Recent court cases in Japan have made it increasingly important for both large and small companies to pay careful attention to intellectual property rights generated by employees in the course of day-to-day operations.  Mori Hamada & Matsumoto provides advice both to startup ventures and large-sized corporations, as well as universities and other institutions, in connection with internal policies and procedures to control, protect and acquire intellectual property rights.  The firm also advises on control systems for corporate trade secrets and customer information, which has become increasingly important given recent legislation focusing on protection of the privacy of personal information maintained by companies.

The age of broadband and e-commerce has fully dawned in Japan.  Mori Hamada & Matsumoto advises on all aspect of legal issues that have developed with the rise of the Internet and e-commerce, such as those involving electronic funds transfers, digital signatures, Internet service provider liability issues and domain name disputes.

The firm's entertainment law practice group offers services for each phase of the production, acquisition and distribution of commercial content, such as animated cartoons, motion pictures, games, photographs, books and music.  The firm provides similar services in connection with performances and other events such as sporting events, art exhibitions, music festivals and theatrical performances.
