Opening of MHM Jakarta Desk

Mori Hamada & Matsumoto (“MHM”) is pleased to announce the opening of an MHM Desk in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Among the rapidly-growing economies of the ASEAN, Indonesia has the largest population and has been recognized as an important base of overseas operations for many Japanese companies, and the business activities of Japanese companies in Indonesia have grown in significance and diversity. It is vital in Indonesia to conduct business activities with an appropriate understanding of the laws and management practices of that country when establishing operations in Indonesia and executing those operations after establishment, because compared to other nations in the ASEAN, material revisions to laws are frequently enacted in Indonesia, and Indonesian authorities hold a high level of discretion in their oversight of management practices.

MHM has actively dispatched its attorneys overseas, including to other countries in Asia, and was among the first Japanese firms to expand its service into China (Beijing and Shanghai), Singapore, and Myanmar, and established an office in Thailand last year. MHM has made use of its expertise relating to the varied issues specific to emerging countries that the firm has obtained from these activities and its accumulated experience in cross-border transactions to provide legal services to clients that are expanding their businesses globally. In order to further expand and improve these structures and to support clients doing business in Asia, MHM and Arfidea Kadri Sahetapy-Engel Tisnadisastra (“AKSET Law”)* have agreed to open an MHM Jakarta Desk at AKSET Law offices. This is based on the alliance between the two firms in Indonesia, a country which is demonstrating remarkably rapid growth among the emerging countries in Asia.

The MHM Jakarta Desk will operate in the offices of AKSET Law, and MHM lawyers stationed in their office will work together with AKSET Law to provide legal services for Indonesia-related deals. MHM has dispatched attorneys to Indonesia since 2012, and Tetsu Takeuchi, an MHM lawyer stationed in AKSET Law, has been MHM’s main source of support for Indonesia-related legal matters since 2014. Now, with the strengthening of the alliance between MHM and AKSET Law, he can take advantage of increased support from AKSET Law and their formidable expertise, enabling MHM to provide even more comprehensive legal services. In addition to Tetsu Takeuchi, Reiji Hosokawa will be stationed at the MHM Jakarta Desk from mid-2016.

MHM will continue to encourage all lawyers working at the offices in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Bangkok and Yangon, as well as the newly-opened MHM Jakarta Desk, to work together to provide better legal services to its clients.

Thank you for your support.
