Opening of Hanoi Office in Vietnam and Strengthening of the Firm’s Vietnam Practice

Mori Hamada & Matsumoto (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) is pleased to announce the opening of its office in Hanoi, Vietnam, with our Hanoi office having commenced its operations starting in January 2022. Along with the opening of the Hanoi Office, the firm has also further strengthened its Vietnam Practice.

Since the opening of the firm’s Ho Chi Minh City Office (“HCMC Office”) in August 2018, the firm’s partners Takuya Eguchi and Kenji Nishio have been based in the HCMC Office, and have handled a wide range of investments into the Vietnamese market (including establishments of new offices, M&A transactions, joint ventures and other investments), real estate and infrastructure development projects, and advice on Vietnamese law more broadly (including disputes, investigations of fraud, and the day-to-day conduct of business in Vietnam).

With the recent rapid development of Vietnam’s economy, there has been an increase in investments into the Vietnamese market by companies from all over the world, leading to significant and growing demand from our clients for on-the-ground legal support and in the variety of legal support required. Therefore, the firm has decided to also establish an office in Hanoi. Hanoi is the political center of Vietnam, and the main city in northern Vietnam. The opening of our Hanoi office will enable us to be closer to our clients investing in northern Vietnam and provide them with a wider offering of legal support.

The Hanoi Office will be headed by the firm’s partners Takeshi Mukawa and Hiroki Kishi, working alongside Ha Thi Dung, our Vietnamese law-qualified partner. Takeshi Mukawa has led the firm’s practice in a number of ASEAN countries, having opened the firm’s Singapore office (Mori Hamada & Matsumoto (Singapore) LLP) in 2012 and the Yangon office (Myanmar Legal MHM Limited) in 2014. In addition to his roles in those offices, he will further develop the firm’s Vietnam practice. Hiroki Kishi has been working at the firm’s Bangkok office, Chandler MHM Limited, since 2017, and has extensive knowledge and experience practicing in ASEAN countries. In addition to Takeshi and Hiroki, Ha Thi Dung will also be based in the firm’s Hanoi office. Ha Thi Dung is a Vietnamese law-qualified lawyer with extensive experience supporting foreign companies investing in Vietnam. She joined the firm as partner in our Hanoi office in November 2021. Takeshi, Hiroki and Ha Thi Dung will lead the further expansion of the Hanoi office, to support our clients in Vietnam in relation to Vietnamese law, in collaboration with the HCMC Office.

With regard to the HCMC Office, we are pleased to announce that Kana Manabe, a partner of the firm, and Nirmalan Amirthanesan, an associate qualified in Australia, will relocate to the HCMC Office, and in addition, we are pleased to welcome a new Vietnamese law-qualified partner, Nguyen Ngoc Phuc, who will join the HCMC Office in February 2022. Kana Manabe specialises in international disputes and compliance, and has played an active role in the Singapore and Yangon offices since 2014. She has a strong record of supporting clients in ASEAN countries. In addition to her roles in the firm’s Singapore and Yangon offices, she will also work to strengthen the firm’s Vietnam practice, including the firm’s disputes and compliance practices, while based in the HCMC Office. Nirmalan Amirthanesan is a lawyer qualified in Australia who has experience advising on a wide range of matters in Southeast Asia while based at the firm’s Yangon office. Nguyen Ngoc Phuc is a Vietnamese lawyer who was previously a partner at a leading Vietnamese law firm. He has an outstanding track record and experience particularly in the area of real estate development in Vietnam. Along with the opening of the Hanoi office, the firm has further strengthened its Vietnam practice through these appointments.

The firm’s vision is to be the “firm of choice” by consistently being the first firm that clients turn to and rely on when facing the most critical of issues, when confronting the most complex of matters, and when needing the most expeditious resolution.  We believe that the strengthening of the our Vietnam practice will enable us to serve our clients and fulfil this mission. Mori Hamada & Matsumoto’s Vietnam offices will continue to work together as one to fulfill the trust and expectations of our clients and be their Firm of Choice.
