Electricity/Gas

The right combination of experience and up-to-date knowledge to assist clients in the fields of electricity and gas, which have undergone significant changes as a result of infrastructure reforms

Since 2012, certain developments have caused many changes in Japan’s business environment, including:

  • introduction of, and revisions to, the feed-in tariff scheme for renewable electrical energy;
  • reform of electricity infrastructure (with the establishment of the Organization for Cross-regional Coordination of Transmission Operators (OCCTO), retail liberalization, and separation of power generation and transmission); and
  • reform of gas infrastructure (retail commercialization and separation of gas pipes for production and transmission).

By seconding lawyers to the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy (including to the Renewable Energy Promotion Office and the Electricity and Gas Industry Department’s Reform Promotion Office), OCCTO, Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation, electric power companies, trading companies, and major financial institutions, we have accumulated knowledge, information, and experience, including with respect to the operation of renewable energy generation businesses, planning for gas and electricity infrastructure reform and other relevant legal reform, and implementation of a variety of related projects.

We also have a strong track record of involvement in electricity and gas, representing a broad range of parties, including sponsors, business operators, financial institutions, and EPC businesses involved in related projects.

We are particularly experienced in electricity projects, engaging in matters related to thermal power generation projects involving coal and liquefied natural gas and the development of power plants for solar power, wind-generated power, geothermal power (including flash and binary), medium and small scale hydroelectric power, biomass, and other renewable energy sources.
