Shin Tokii joins Mori Hamada & Matsumoto

Message from Mr. Shin Tokii

I am honored to be joining Mori Hamada & Matsumoto.

After gaining experience working as a systems engineer, I then went on to pass the bar exam.  I believe that research and practice of intellectual property law are two wheels of the same cart, and when I look back on my career to date, I have spent half of my career as a researcher and half as a practitioner.  As a practitioner, I have focused on patent infringement litigation, and in 2013, I represented the defendant in a patent case in which damages with a claim amount of 20.3 billion yen (150 million yen of charges) were disputed, leading to the dismissal of the claim.  As a researcher, my lifelong research theme has been inventive steps in patent requirements, and in 2023 I published a book titled “Inventive Step in Patent Laws-Its Theoretical Implications and A Comparative Study of Japan, China, Germany, EPO and US-”, Shinzansha (2023), which I worked on for 10 years and analyzed 2,400 court cases.

At Mori Hamada & Matsumoto, I look forward to leveraging my experience to date and will strive to further hone my professional expertise to support our clients.
