Activities

Bar Association Activities 

Lawyers at the firm are active participants in bar association committees and serve as court appointed defense counsel and duty attorneys. Highlights of our lawyers' activities during 2010 are described below. 

Lawyers at the firm are active in committees of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA), the Tokyo Bar Association, the Dai-ichi Tokyo Bar Association and the Daini Tokyo Bar Association (Niben). As for activities during 2010, Ryota Yamagishi became the Chairperson of the Back-up Team for the Corporate Law Subcommittee of the Legislative Council of the JFBA's Judicial System Research Board, and the Chairperson of the Niben's Working Group for the New Lawyers Support Office. Also, Daisuke Oda became a member of the JFBA's Working Group on Unfair Deprivation of Profit and Class Actions, and Katsuyuki Shibata became a member of the JFBA's Committee on the Lay Judge System. 
During 2010, a total of 60 of the firm's lawyers served as duty attorneys in 56 cases and as court-appointed defense counsel in 63 cases, and provided free legal counsel in 50 cases. 

Public Organization Activities 

Many lawyers from the firm have been transferred to public offices and other public organizations to participate in forming policies and systems and drafting legislation, or to serve as members of various councils, research groups, and advisory panels. 

・ Financial Services Agency (FSA)
Toru Ishiguro became a member of the FSA's Working Group on Disclosure Systems, which released a report called "Expansion in the scope of English document disclosure" in December 2010. Gaku Ishiwata became a member of the FSA's Liaison Conference on Corporate Governance and another six lawyers from the firm were transferred to the FSA in 2010. In addition, Yukinaga Kojima became a member of the Mediation Committee of the Trust Companies Association of Japan, which is regulated by the FSA.

・ Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)
Gaku Ishiwata became a member of METI's Working Group on New M&A Schemes and Other Matters. Soichiro Fujiwara serves as a member of METI's Study Group for Debt Equity Swaps related to Restructuring, which released a report in January 2010. One lawyer from the firm was transferred to METI in 2009 and continued to serve in 2010.

・ Agency for Cultural Affairs
 One lawyer from the firm was transferred to the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2009 and continued to serve in 2010. Masafumi Masuda took part in the preparation of a research report commissioned by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, which was released in May 2010 and titled "Legal Arguments and Analysis on Legal Issues, etc. regarding U.S. Copyright Litigation Documents". 

・ Ministry of Justice
 One lawyer from the firm was transferred to the Ministry of Justice in March 2010. In addition, Shuya Nomura became a secretary of the Corporate Law Subcommittee of the Legislative Council in April 2010, and Keiichi Tadaki became a member of the Review Group on Guidelines for Prosecutors in November 2010. 

・ Cabinet Office
 In April 2010, Yumiko Waseda became a member of the Green Innovation Working Group of the Subcommittee for Regulation and Institutional Reform at the Government Revitalization Unit in the Cabinet Office, and Ayako Ikeda became a member of the Information Disclosure and Personal Information Protection Review Board of the Cabinet Office. Junichi Tobimatsu was selected as an External Expert for Civil Service Review for the Government Revitalization Unit in May 2010. 

・ Ministry of Environment
Takeshi Mukawa serves as a member of the Ministry's Advisory Committee on Legal Issues Regarding the Domestic Emissions Trading Scheme, which released a report in January 2010. Takeshi Mukawa also became an expert member of the Emissions Trading Subcommittee within the Global Environment Committee of the Central Environment Council of the Japanese Government in April 2010. 

・Activities in other public organizations
 In February 2010, Yukinaga Kojima became a mediation committee member for the Financial Instruments Mediation Assistance Center (FINMAC), a specified nonprofit organization, and also became a member of the Sales Representative Disciplinary Committee of the Japan Securities Dealers Association in July 2010.

Activities at Educational Institutions 

A number of lawyers from the firm have been teaching at law schools, universities and legal organizations. During 2010, a total of 44 lawyers served as lecturers or committee members in 30 different educational institutions, actively participating in training initiatives for future legal professionals. In April 2010, a total of 11 lawyers became associate professors, lecturers or part-time lecturers at universities, graduate schools or law schools.
 In November 2010, Kaoru Kamata became the President of Waseda University. Also in November, Takuya Iizuka was appointed as a member of the New Bar Examination Review Committee, and in April, Katsuyuki Shibata was appointed as a practicing attorney professor for the Legal Training and Research Institute of Japan.
